Unit 2

                                                                            UNIT 2

Here we are going to review some important things that we need to learn in this unit.

    1. Review of present simple and present continuous.

    2.  Past Simple. Regular and irregular verbs.

    3.  Past Continuous.  While and when.

    4.  Past simple vs Past continuous.

    1. Review of present simple and present continuous.

Present Simple: We use present simple to indicate

            a) Routines or habits: I wake up everyday at 7:30 a.m.

            b) Likes, dislikes and feelings:  I like fish and chips

            c) True facts or general truths: A year has 365 days and 4 hours.

It is important to remember how do we form the present simple.

    Present Continous:

We use the present continouos to indicate that something is happening now or it is very         likely that happens in the future. Ex. I am typing now.

How do we form the Present Continous ?

How can we differentiate

It is very easy to differentiate when we look at the meaning of the sentence. For example:

a) I play tennis twice a week.

b) I   am playing tennis with Juan today.

The first sentence refers to a habit while the second one refers to an action that is taking place in the present or close future.

    2.  Past Simple. Regular and irregular verbs.

We use the past simple to talk about an action that happens in a time before now and it is completed or finished.

Ex. I cooked paella last thursday.( the action is in the past and it is finished.

In here, it is important to differentiate between regular and irregular verbs.

https://es.liveworksheets.com/worksheets/en/English_as_a_Second_Language_(ESL)/Past_simple/Past_Simple_Worksheet_dq3193427bh

    3.  Past Continuous.  While and when.

We use the past continuous to talk about actions that were in progress in the past. The form is similar to the Present continuous but we use the auxiliar TO BE in past simple + main verb+ ing

There are 3 scenarios when we are going to use the Past Continuous:

    a) An action in progress in the past.  I was doing my homework at 5:00 pm

    b) Two actions in progress simultaneously. She was working on the project while he was doing nothing.

    c) One action in progress interrupted by another. She was talking when the teacher entered in the room.

    4.  Past simple vs Past continuous.

When we want to differentiate between Past simple and Past continuous we need to get the meaning of the sentence. If the action is finished, we are going to use Past Simple. If the action was in progress at that moment we are going to use  Past continuous.

4) There is/ There are

We use there is/ are to say "hay o existen".  There is refers to the singular or uncountable things while there are refers to the plural or countable things.

There is milk . There are 3 pencils.

2) Present Continuous.

We use the present continuous to indicate something that is happening now or it is very possible to happen in the future.  To form the present continuous we need : the verb to be as an auxiliary verb(am/is or are) + main verb with ing.

Ex. I am playing football now.

3) Somebody/anybody/ nobody

3) Present Continuous vs Present Simple

It is very easy to differentiate when are we going to use present simple or present continous.

1) The meaning: If the sentence indicate a routine, like or a fact we know that we use present simple. If the sentence indicates that is happening now, it is present continuous.

2) Some words:

Present simple: Some adverbs like always, never, sometimes may indicate routines so those adverbs  help us to identify the present simple.

I rarely drink tea in the morning (it is a routine )

On the other hand, some expressions like now, at the moment , here...  indicates that the action is taking place and we need to use the present continuous.

I am drinking tea at the moment.
